Keith scored at 16:12 of the third, and Chicago overcame a brutal start on its way to a clinching 4-3 victory over the Nashville Predators in Game 6 of their tight postseason series. ''Certainly our guys, when the games are on the line, the stakes are higher, they just love that challenge and like to meet it and rise to it.'' Blackhawks coach Joel Quenneville said.
Islanders captain John Tavares was still attempting to gather his bearings after being leveled in the corner, when he heard the familiar - and welcome - roar go up inside the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum for what could be the last time. Sparked by Tavares' rush, Nikolay Kulemin scored the go-ahead goal with 9:27 left in a 3-1 victory over the Washington Capitals on Saturday that forced a seventh game in the first-round playoff series. Now the two Metropolitan Division rivals who finished the season with 101 points each will meet Monday night in Washington to decide who advances to face the Presidents' Trophy-winning New York Rangers. The next objective is to advance to the second round and deliver at least two more home games before the Islanders make the 28-mile-move west to the Barclays Center in Brooklyn next season.
Ukraine's Wladimir Klitschko easily outpointed a game-but-outclassed Bryant Jennings in the champion's first fight in the United States in seven years, defending his heavyweight titles with a unanimous decision Saturday night. ''It is great to come back to Madison Square Garden, to be home here and fight here,'' Klitschko said. His jab and straight right hands kept Jennings from getting inside, and the unbeaten American had little chance of winning from distance. Yet, with Jennings still standing in the middle rounds and beginning to land some punches, the Americans in the crowd began shouting ''U-S-A! U-S-A!'' But the Philadelphian never really had a chance and was outpunched 545-376, with 144 landing for Klitschko, 110 for the challenger.
Petr Mrazek's confidence is growing by the victory. One more win over the Tampa Bay Lightning, and the Detroit Red Wings and their young goaltender will advance in the NHL playoffs. ''Calm, solid all the way through,'' veteran defenseman Niklas Kronwall said about the 23-year-old goalie from the Czech Republic. ''Doesn't get too high, doesn't get too low.'' Mrazek stopped 28 shots for his second shutout of the series Saturday night, helping the Red Wings rebound from a disappointing loss in the previous game to beat the Lightning 4-0 and take a 3-2 lead in the best-of-seven first-round matchup.
Four members of the Royals and three from the White Sox were punished for their roles in a series-opening brawl in Chicago, and six of the players drew suspensions. Major League Baseball placed the blame for the fighting squarely on both teams. Royals pitcher Yordano Ventura was handed a seven-game suspension, fellow starter Edinson Volquez given five games and outfielder Lorenzo Cain and reliever Kelvin Herrera got two games apiece.
Stung by the loss of point guard Mike Conley, the Grizzlies gritted out their latest victory over the Trail Blazers. Memphis took a 3-0 lead in its first-round playoff series against Portland with a 115-109 victory on Saturday night. The Grizzlies were already without backup point guard Beno Udrih, who sprained his right ankle in Game 2 and sat out Saturday's game. Game 4 is set for Monday in Portland.
Adam Wainwright's ankle injury put a damper on Mitch Harris' major league debut for St. Louis and took most of the luster off the Cardinals' 5-3 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers on Saturday night. Wainwright was helped from the field by a trainer after injuring his left ankle while stumbling out of the batter's box on his popup to first leading off the fifth inning. ''It's something in the back of my ankle so we'll see what it is on Monday,'' said Wainwright, who was wearing a walking boot after the game. ''Everything right now is just all speculation.'' Wainwright will be re-evaluated when the Cardinals return to St. Louis.
The Calgary Flames never blinked after falling into a quick 3-0 hole - and the Sea of Red never stopped cheering. ''What about the crowd?'' Flames coach Bob Hartley said. Matt Stajan broke a tie with 4:17 left and Calgary beat the Vancouver Canucks 7-4 on Saturday night to win the Western Conference playoff series 4-2. I'm just happy it didn't go to overtime and we found a way here.'' Calgary will face the Anaheim Ducks in the second round.
